10-11-09 Weekend visit Running Springs

So, we went to Running Springs today. I've taken so many photos of Steller Jays that I thought I wouldn't this time...but they came to the pine tree at the corner of the house as if they knew seeing me meant peanuts were coming. At first I thought I'd just give them one handful. But once the Jays started coming for the peanuts, I couldn't resist picking up my camera. And then in flew this little female Clown-faced Acorn Woodpecker. The Jays have this odd habit of picking peanuts up and throwing many down before they take one. I imagine that's how this woodpecker appeared with a shelled one--it was probably a Stellar Jay reject. The woodpecker then proceeded to stuff the peanut into the oak tree.
