March 22, 2008 Fan Palm Removal

It's not that we don't love Palm trees. The one in our backyard was growing taller and wider in leaps and bounds. We'd already rerouted the picket fence when the gate no longer fastened shut, for the tree having nudged against the post. Merlyn had taken to barking at it daily, first thing in the morning (our kind uncomplaining neighbors will now have to invest in alarm clocks as they try to adjust to his silence) and last thing at night (the local drugstore, while selling more alarm clocks, will see a sharp drop in earplug sales)---doubtless some critter hiding in the tree's petticoat was sticking it's tongue out at him.
So, this weekend we gave Freddy's Tree Service $800.00 to replace the tree with a bald spot. This included removing the tree completely and grinding out the root, not an easy task, as the drill kept hitting the boulders that the tree had enveloped as it grew --having originally been planted in a rock garden).

That white thing in the middle of the frame is the abandoned picket fence post after we routed the fence.
